How Many Shingles Do I Need? Calculator and Coverage Guide

Ordering the right amount of shingles is essential for a smooth roofing project. Too few and you face delays waiting for more material. Too many means wasted money. Shingles are sold by the square (100 square feet of coverage), and calculating how many squares you need requires knowing your roof area and accounting for waste.

Step 1: Calculate Your Roof Area

Start with the footprint of your house (length × width for each roof plane). For a simple gable roof on a 40×30-foot house, the footprint area is 1,200 square feet. But your actual roof area is larger because the roof is sloped. Multiply by your pitch multiplier: a 6:12 pitch has a multiplier of 1.118, so 1,200 × 1.118 = 1,342 square feet of actual roof area.

Step 2: Calculate Squares Needed

Divide your roof area by 100 to get squares. 1,342 sq ft ÷ 100 = 13.42 squares. This is your base number before waste.

Step 3: Add Waste Factor

Add waste percentage based on roof complexity:

  • Simple gable roof with few penetrations — add 5-10%
  • Hip roof — add 10-15%
  • Complex roof with multiple valleys, dormers, or skylights — add 15-20%

For our example with 10% waste: 13.42 × 1.10 = 14.76 squares, so order 15 squares.

How Many Bundles Per Square?

Standard 3-tab and architectural shingles typically come 3 bundles per square. Some heavier architectural shingles and premium products may come 4 bundles per square — always check the coverage information on the bundle wrapper. For 15 squares at 3 bundles per square, order 45 bundles.

Don’t Forget Starter Strips and Hip/Ridge Caps

Starter strips go along the eaves and rakes. Ridge cap shingles cover the ridge and any hip ridges. Ridge cap coverage: measure the total linear footage of all ridges and hips. A bundle of ridge cap covers approximately 20-35 linear feet depending on the product. Hip and ridge length for a 40×30 gable: approximately 40 linear feet of ridge.

Underlayment and Accessories

Don’t forget felt paper or synthetic underlayment (1 roll covers approximately 400 sq ft), ice and water shield for the first 3 feet of each eave and valley (in cold climates), roofing nails (approximately 320 nails per square for standard application), and drip edge for all eaves and rakes.
