Paver Calculator: How Many Pavers Do I Need for a Patio?

Calculating Paver Quantity
Start by calculating your patio area in square feet. For a 12×16-foot patio: 192 square feet. Next, find the coverage per paver. Divide paver length by 12 and paver width by 12, then multiply. A 4×8-inch paver covers (4/12) × (8/12) = 0.333 × 0.667 = 0.222 square feet per paver. Divide your total area by coverage per paver: 192 ÷ 0.222 = 864 pavers. Add 10% for cuts and waste: 864 × 1.10 = 951 pavers. Round up to 960 or the next packaging quantity.
Base Material Calculations
Proper base preparation is critical for a level, long-lasting paver patio. A standard installation requires:
- Compacted gravel base — 4-6 inches deep for patios
- Sand setting bed — 1 inch deep
For 192 sq ft with a 4-inch gravel base: 192 × (4/12) = 64 cubic feet ÷ 27 = 2.37 cubic yards of gravel. For the 1-inch sand bed: 192 × (1/12) = 16 cubic feet ÷ 27 = 0.6 cubic yards of coarse sand. Add 10% for compaction: order approximately 2.6 cubic yards gravel and 0.7 cubic yards sand.
Paver Patterns and Waste
Running bond (brick-like offset pattern) generates the least waste — 5-7%. Herringbone pattern requires 45-degree cuts along all edges — add 10-15% waste. Basketweave pattern generates moderate waste. Complex designs with multiple sizes and colors can require 15-20% additional pavers for waste.
Polymeric Sand
After laying pavers, fill joints with polymeric sand and activate with water. It hardens to resist weeds and ant activity. Coverage varies by joint size and paver type, but plan for approximately 50 lbs per 30-50 square feet for 3/8-inch joints.
