Stone Veneer Calculator: Coverage Estimates for Interior and Exterior
Stone veneer gives walls the look of natural stone at a fraction of the weight and cost. Whether you’re accentuating a fireplace, adding curb appeal to a home exterior, or creating a feature wall, accurate material calculation ensures you have enough stone without significant overorder.
Types of Stone Veneer
Natural thin stone veneer is cut from real stone at 3/4-inch to 1.5-inch thickness. It has the authentic look and feel of natural stone and is more durable but heavier and more expensive. Manufactured stone veneer (MSV) is concrete cast to look like natural stone. It’s lighter, more consistent in size, and less expensive — typically $8-$20 per square foot versus $15-$35 for natural thin stone.
Calculating Square Footage Needed
Measure the height and width of each wall section to be covered. Subtract large openings (windows, doors) but don’t subtract electrical outlets or small details. For a fireplace surround: measure the face area including the chimney breast. Add all wall section areas together for total square footage. Add 10% for cuts and waste on simple applications; add 15% for more complex shapes or patterns.
Corner Pieces
Corners require special consideration. Pre-made corner pieces (sold by linear foot) are used where two veneered surfaces meet at a 90-degree angle. Measure all exterior and interior corners in linear feet. Trying to cut corner returns from flat pieces is difficult and creates visible seams — always order corner pieces. Budget approximately 1 corner piece per linear foot of corner.
Mortar and Installation Materials
Stone veneer requires a scratch coat of mortar applied to metal lath (for wood-framed walls) or directly to masonry. Type S mortar is standard for exterior applications; Type N for interior. One 80-lb bag of mortar covers approximately 15-20 square feet for the scratch coat and setting bed combined. Also account for metal lath ($30-$50 per 27-sq-ft sheet), sealer, and grout if applicable.
Cost Summary
Manufactured stone veneer materials run $8-$20 per square foot. Professional installation adds $8-$15 per square foot in labor. Natural thin stone adds $5-$15 per square foot more for materials. A 100-square-foot fireplace surround in manufactured stone runs $2,000-$4,000 installed professionally, or $1,000-$2,500 in materials for a DIY installation.
