Brick Calculator: How Many Bricks Per Square Foot?

Brick quantity depends on the brick size, mortar joint width, and the type of installation (single wythe wall, paving, or veneer). This guide covers the most common scenarios.

Standard Brick Sizes

The most common brick in North America is the standard modular brick: 3.625 inches long × 2.25 inches tall × 2.25 inches deep (nominal 4×2.25×8 including a 3/8-inch mortar joint). Other common sizes include queen bricks (nominal 3×2.75×10) and king bricks (nominal 3.5×2.75×10). Always verify the specific size of the brick you’re purchasing, as it significantly affects quantity calculations.

Bricks Per Square Foot for Wall Construction

For a standard single-wythe wall using modular bricks with 3/8-inch mortar joints, the face area of each brick including mortar = (3.625 + 0.375) × (2.25 + 0.375) = 4 × 2.625 = 10.5 square inches = 0.0729 square feet. So bricks per square foot = 1 ÷ 0.0729 = approximately 6.75 bricks per square foot. Most professionals use 7 bricks per square foot as the working number for standard modular brick with 3/8-inch joints.

Bricks Per Square Foot for Paving

For flat paving (brick patio or walkway), bricks are typically laid on their face. Using standard modular bricks laid flat (3.625 × 7.625 inches): face area = 27.63 square inches = 0.192 square feet including joints. Bricks per square foot for paving ≈ 4.5-5.2 depending on joint width. Use 4.5 bricks/sq ft as a conservative estimate for paving calculations.

Mortar Calculations

For wall construction, plan for approximately 0.3 cubic feet of mortar per square foot of wall (for a single wythe wall). A standard 80-lb bag of mortar mix yields approximately 0.45 cubic feet. For a 50-square-foot wall: 50 × 0.3 = 15 cubic feet ÷ 0.45 = 33 bags of mortar. Add 10-15% for waste.

Always add 5-10% to brick orders for breakage, cuts, and color matching. Order a few extra to keep on hand — brick lots can vary slightly in color between production runs, making it hard to match exactly later.
